These photographs were all shot in L.A. spanning a seven
year period from 1985-1992. Most of them were taken in the
bathrooms of clubs using the only available light, and are
part of a series to be published in a forthcoming book.
I wanted to capture and document the more flamboyant young
people of the 90's by photographing them in their natural
'habitat' - those creatures of the night who populate the
Gothic scene when the clock has struck long past the hour
of midnight.
I am fascinated by costumes, masks and ritual. For me, this
bold new generation, spun-off of the punk movement, represents
a mysterious hybrid of "revolutionary chic" - androgynous,
moody statements of social disorder and discontent expressed
in a costume drama. Such a proud cast of characters would
fit right into a Shakespeare play.
To me these photos evoke a period of new exploration within
an old format; an attitude that was still fresh, experimental
and exciting. The great thing about the "scene"
in LA at the time was the willingness of the models to pose
and show themselves to me. The meticulous attention to detail
taken in applying their make-up and creating interesting costumes
proved to be a constant source of inspiration.
